The Jewish Museum of Greece was founded in 1977 to preserve, research and organize exhibitions of culture, which has 2,300 years of Jewish spirit in Greece. As a historical and ethnographic museum, it presents a vivid picture of Jewish history and traditions over the centuries. The collection is continuously enriched and consists of seven and a half thousand original objects, photographs, documents and files and includes a variety of material from everyday and religious life and the history of Greek Jews. The total area of the new building of the Museum is 800 square meters. m., where permanent exhibitions of contemporary art, temporary exhibitions, video materials are organized, there are training halls, a library, a photo archive, a workshop and a shop. The permanent exhibition illustrates thematic groups such as synagogues and ritual accessories, a calendar, traditional costumes, the Holocaust, the cycle of life and the historical path of Greek Jews. Special attention is paid to the educational work of the museum, especially in the field of intercultural education and programs for children and young people. Temporary exhibitions and events organized by the Museum relate to the themes of modern art, literature, poetry, music, and, in general, all forms of human expression, in order to cover cultural and artistic production. In addition to presenting a lively picture of the past, the museum aims to study the diachronic nature of Greek Jews and explores this issue by comparing memory and history, trying to be an active element of culture.
