National Museum named after A.V. Anokhina is the oldest institution of the Altai Republic. Its history begins on October 29, 1918 with the acquisition by the Altai Zemsky District Council of paleontological, mineralogical collections, a scientific library and an archive from the Siberian scientists of the Gulyaevs. One of its first organizers and directors was A.V. Anokhin (1869-1931), a researcher of the traditional culture of the peoples of Southern Siberia, whose name has been in the museum since 1989.
The number of exhibits of the main fund is more than 66 thousand units of storage. These are unique collections on paleontology, ethnography, works of fine art and decorative and applied art, old printed and handwritten books of the XVII - XX centuries, documents, photographs on the history of Gorny Altai XIX - XX centuries, samples of flora and fauna, mineralogical collection.
The structure of the National Museum has 4 branches: the Museum of Local Lore named after I.V. Shodoev in with. Ust-Kan, Ust-Kansky District; Museum of the Kazakh Altai in with. Zhana-Aul Kosh-Agach district; Museum-estate GI Choros-Gurkin in with. Anos Chemal district; Museum of the Altai narrator N.U. Ulagasheva in with. Paspaul Choysky district.
In the main museum there are departments: history, nature, art, mass excursion and foundations, a research library with a reading room. In 2008-2012. reconstruction of the building and new extensions, which now fully comply with modern safety and security of museum objects and museum collections. The exposition covers the natural, historical and archaeological and ethnographic aspects of the development of the region.
