Fort Wadsworth is a former United States military base on Staten Island in New York, located on the Narrow Islands that divide the New York Bay into Upper and Lower Halves, the natural defense point of Upper Bay and Manhattan beyond. Before closing in 1994, he claimed that it was the longest military installation in the United States. Divided into several small units, including Fort Tompkins and Fort Richmond, its current name was adopted in 1865 in honor of Brigadier General James Wadsworth, who was killed in the battle for the desert during the civil war. Fort Wadsworth is currently part of the Staten Island Gateway National Recreation Area, supported by the National Park Service.
